Up in the Clouds, Down in the Valley
documentary feature — projected release late 2026
Carmen Papalia, a visually impaired conceptual artist living with chronic pain, navigates the world through his extraordinary imagination and deep capacity for connection. With unshakable optimism, he challenges a society built for the sighted through bold performances and collaborative installations. His distinctive way of seeing propels him into a thriving international art career, but as his work gains recognition, he must confront the pressure his access needs put on his marriage and evolving role as a father. When his wife Kristin, an artist who also serves as his assistant, reaches a breaking point, Carmen is forced to face the personal toll of his mission. Shot with vivid, sensorial detail, “Up in the Clouds, Down in the Valley” authentically reimagines accessibility, interdependence, and the bonds that both tear us apart, and hold us together.
