Up in the Clouds, Down in the Valley

documentary feature — projected release late 2026

Carmen Papalia, a visually impaired conceptual artist living with a complex degenerative illness navigates the world through his extraordinary imagination and deep capacity for connection—propelling him into an international art career. With unshakable optimism he challenges a society built for the sighted through bold performances and installations. But as his work gains recognition, he must confront systemic ableism and the very institutions that commission him. Meanwhile, his evolving roles as a father, husband, and eldest son in a traditional Italian family create complexity—when his wife—who also serves as his art manager and access support—reaches a breaking point. Carmen is forced to face the personal toll of his mission.

Shot in cinema verite and with immersive, sensorial detail, Up in the Clouds, Down in the Valley is a tender and illuminating portrait of an artist that redefines how we see—and hear—disability, perception, and care.
